Rain Rain Go AWAY!

With downpour rain, hail and tornados affecting Southern California right now, I dream of warm faraway places.  All of these places are at the top of my list!  

Blancaneaux Lodge, Belize

Mum Mum Mum Mah Poker Face

Professional poker player Bradley “Yukon” Booth – a spokesperson for online gaming website GR88.com who is widely known for his stint on NBC’s hit show Poker after Dark – has recently made some noteworthy observations about women and the world of poker that I thought you might find interesting…..

Bradley stated the obvious in Bluff Magazine: there are many more men out there playing the game. But then he poses an intriguing question: does that mean that this male dominated arena is off limits to a female champion?

He argues that while the game is dominated by males, there are many reasons why women would actually give men a run for their money. He bases this statement on several observations made over the course of his decorated career, notably three distinct advantages that women possess: 

• Rational thinking – women can stay more calm in heated situations
• Ego in check – women aren’t driven by ego to make irrational, “stupid” moves
• Masters of body language – women, more in tune with their body language, can use this to their advantage to confuse and distract opponents

So ladies ask yourself this: the next time the boys claim it’s “Guy’s Night,” a time for poker and beer, why not raise the stakes and give the table a try? Bradley Yukon is willing to bet that you’ll have the upper hand in the game – and even predicts that women will come to dominate as poker becomes more mainstream.

Of course many males will argue against Bradley’s claims, but there you have it. Interesting food for thought.

Your Help is Mandatory!

After today’s 6.1 earthquake in Haiti, it is more than ever, extremely important to contribute by making a donation to a Haitian relief effort.  A close friend to LaDolceSwag met with Red Cross officials today and they made it very clear it is crucial to make monetary donations instead of merchandise donations.  Apparently it is very expensive and wasteful to transport product donations to the island, and the money goes a lot farther if the goods are purchased and delivered throughout the Caribbean islands.

Here are some ways to make a difference:

Google.com is donating $1 million and has opened portals so you can donate to UNICEF and CARE through Google Checkout: http://www.google.com/relief/haitiearthquake/

The following organizations are accepting SMS donations in the US only:

·               SMS text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 to Red Cross

·               SMS text “YELE” to 501501 to donate $5 to Yele Haiti

·               SMS text “GIVE10” to 20222 to donate $10 to Direct Relief

On January 22^nd, 2010,  George Clooney & friends are participating in a celebrity telethon, Hope for Haiti Now – a star-studded two-hour telethon airing Friday that will feature musical performances from Los Angeles, New York City and London, plus live reporting from CNN's Anderson Cooper in Haiti.

Proceeds from the telethon will be split evenly between The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, United Nations World Food Programme, Oxfam America, Partners in Health, The Red Cross, UNICEF and the Yele Haiti Foundation.

The show will be the most widely distributed telethon in history and will air on more than 25 networks.

Gaga for Helping Haiti.  Lady Gaga is asking her Little Monsters to contribute toward disaster relief in Haiti on Sunday, January 24^th.  Proceeds from all merchandise purchased at www.ladygaga.com on this date will go directly to Haitian earthquake relief.  For Monsters attending the Monster Ball in New York City that evening, proceed from all ticket sales and merchandise sold will also be donated to the cause.
