HOLD ME BACK! ...Or do I WANT REVENGE?!

What originally started as “Two Minutes” has now over the years expanded in to “Two Weeks” of festivals and celebrations…The Kentucky Derby.

My whole life I can remember something different attracting me to this weekend. My earliest memory was my little girl fascination being mesmerized by the glamorous women with “Derby Hats” sipping on Mint Juleps, as I grew older my father’s “extended” family raised and trained race horses in central New Jersey with great names like “Ditto Burns,” “Is It Blinking?” “Mr. Squeeze,” “TooManyMartinis” and “Cast In Bronze”. Everything about horses just seemed exciting.

However, the first time I had my chance to place a wager on the event was a DISASTER. My husband and I happened to be in Las Vegas during The Derby in 2005. Minutes before the cage declared, “No more bets,” Jamie nudged me to go get a ticket for the fun of it. As I walked up to the window with the money Jamie handed me, I closed my eyes, carelessly pointed to a name and made my bet. No sooner did the agent hand me my receipt, all bets were off as I looked up and had more time to carefully read each of the Contender’s name. And then I saw it. How could I be so stupid? How was I so blind not to see: GIACOMO? It didn’t matter that every sports book said it was against all odds, or that he was deemed to place last – it was the name. My heart dropped, and the guilt was overwhelming. Giacomo was the last name of a dear friend of mine I had known since I was 13 years old. I knew at that moment – Giacomo was not only going to defy all odds, but win. And guess who won that year? Yep. Giacomo.

So don’t ask me who I am rooting for today. I will never bet again or make a prediction on The Kentucky Derby again! Even though I’m gunning for “Hold Me Back” or “I Want Revenge,” I am also hoping “West Side Bernie” wins because his trainer is from one of the towns I lived in growing-up back in New Jersey. But don’t take my word…those are just my wishes.

Well today my love of The Kentucky Derby is colliding with my other obsession. No, not my vast collection of vintage designer handbags, but my never-ending love for Barbie. I’ve said it a million times; Barbie made me the woman I am today. She taught me I could be an Astronaut, Doctor, Rocker, drive sports cars, have an amazing house, and own FABULOUS accessories. And today, she’s at The Kentucky Derby.

“From the celebrities and socialites who attend to the awe-inspiring hats, the Kentucky Derby is more than just a horse race – it is a famed fashion event. This year, Barbie®, the ultimate fashion icon, showcases legendary Derby fashion with the launch of the Kentucky Derby® Barbie® doll, dressed in a playful floral sundress, faux pearl necklace and sassy spring sandals. True to Kentucky Derby fashion, Barbie doll’s look is topped off with a stylish, oversized white hat with blossoming flower accents.

In addition to the Kentucky Derby® Barbie® doll, Churchill Downs and Mattel will give Barbie® enthusiasts and collectors a chance to own their very own life-sized Kentucky Derby® BarbieTM replica hat. Renowned milliner Christine A. Moore will create up to 135 replica hats to commemorate the 135th Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky® Derby Barbie®. The first hat will be auctioned off through the Clothes® Off Our Back Foundation. Proceeds from the auction will benefit Clothes® Off Our Back’s charities, including Feeding America (formerly named America’s Second Harvest), The Art of Elysium, Hope North and H.E.L.P. Malawi. The remaining 134 hats will be available on a made-to-order basis on www.thederbystore.com.”

Barbie…have a blast!
